Flash Plugin in KDE/FreeBSD
The following instructions should allow you to use Macromedia's Flash 5
plugin for Linux Netscape from within Konqueror 3.1 on FreeBSD. These
instructions should be considered Alpha-Stage. Please give me your feedback!
Install the following ports:
www/linux-flashplugin
www/flashpluginwrapper — If you want to use the plugins with Mozilla as
well as Konqueror, make sure you follow the directions displayed after it
finishes building!
Some of these may import dependencies — in particular, on 5-current,
flashpluginwrapper brings in Mozilla, so be warned.
As root, ln -s /usr/local/lib/libflashplayer.so.1
/usr/local/lib/libflashplayer.so
Install LessTif (port at x11-toolkits/lesstif). This is required for proper
plugin support.
Get a copy of the kdebase sources (instructions on KDE's developer site).
Apply the nspluginscan patch to kdebase/nsplugins/Makefile.am.
Apply the nspluginviewer patch to kdebase/nsplugins/viewer/Makefile.am.
In the kdebase source dir, run gmake -f Makefile.cvs to prepare the
configure script.
Run ./configure with appropriate arguments (I use ./configure
--with-extra-includes=/usr/local/include --with-extra-libs=/usr/local/lib
--prefix=/usr/local).
cd into the nsplugins directory and run 'gmake.'
If that completes, run (as root) 'gmake install.' This should put the new
nsplugin version in place on top of your old one (assuming you had one).
Copy the plugin files to a directory on your system that nspluginscan can
find. In my case, I use $HOME/.netscape/plugins. The list of directories is
available in Konqueror's Plugin settings control panel. The files you need
to copy are ShockwaveFlash.class and libflashplayer_linux.so, which are
either in /usr/X11R6/lib/mozilla/plugins (on 5-current) or
/usr/X11R6/lib/browser_plugins (on 4-stable).
Don't forget to go into Konqueror's Settings control panel, make sure
Plugins are enabled (last item in the list at left), and click Scan for
Plugins. Make sure Flash shows up in the listing on the second tab. If it
doesn't, lemme know.
While in Konqueror's Plugin Settings control panel, uncheck 'Use artsdsp to
pipe plugin sound through aRts,' as artsdsp breaks the Flash plugin on
FreeBSD. Note that the plugin will try to go after /dev/dsp, so aRts should
be bumped to a higher vchan if you want sound.
Testing and Samples
The following sites work for me and/or others.
Homestar Runner, a humor site. There should be music; whether or not the
graphics work should be evident.
